Field of the Invention The invention relates to therapeutic devices and is particularly directed to a therapeutic device which provides fluid treatment of the respiratory system in a comfortable and non-disruptive way. 2. Description of the Prior Art Many respiratory disorders are caused by the accumulation of fluids in the lungs. This accumulation is a result of mucus stagnation which normally occurs when the patient cannot cough. Persons suffering from chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma and the like often have difficulties in clearing their lungs and consequently the fluids collect in their lungs. In treating such patients, it is desirable to remove the accumulated fluids. One prior art method of removing the fluids was to first induce coughing in a patient and then suction the accumulated mucus from the patient's lungs. This method had a number of disadvantages. To induce coughing, strong medications had to be administered which could cause detrimental side effects. Further, the pressure required to induce the cough could be damaging to the lungs and the suctioning procedure was disruptive to the patient. A safer and more comfortable method of removing mucus is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,592,229 wherein a device is inserted in the respiratory tract and heated gas is circulated through the device to heat the device. The gas then carries the heated device through the respiratory tract, while the device continues to heat the gas. Mucus collects on the heated device and is carried by the gas out of the patient's respiratory tract. While this prior art device has a number of advantages over the prior art method of inducing coughing and suctioning mucus, the device is still subject to several disadvantages. One problem with the prior art device is that a thin layer of flexible material must be inserted into the respiratory tract of the patient. The thin layer, which has a relatively large surface area, continues to heat up during use. The thin layer can burn the patient's respiratory tract if a very large surface area is used to heat the gas. Accordingly, it is desirable to limit the maximum temperature of the gas that is circulated through the device. Another disadvantage is that, in the prior art device, the thin layer of flexible material is not entirely 1cdb36666d
